• 1Carry the ID you provided for the safari booking — you will need it at the gate.
• 2Wear beige, olive green, or light grey. Avoid blue, bottle green, red, bright yellow, or pink — colours that stand out against the jungle backdrop. Footwear is not important as you will not be getting off the vehicle except at designated breaks.
• 3Carry a hat or cap and sunglasses. Sunscreen is acceptable if you are prone to burning, though best avoided if possible.
• 4Bring binoculars if you have them.
• 5Maintain silence in the forest. If you spot a tiger, leopard, bear, or any other animal — stay calm, stay still, and stay quiet. Noise will scare them away.
• 6Do not worry if a tiger approaches the vehicle. It is not interested in us — we are not very edible! You are safe inside the jeep as long as you do not lean out.
• 7It is illegal to exit the vehicle except at designated places. This is enforceable under the Wildlife Act and can result in arrest.
• 8No litter whatsoever — not even biodegradable waste, and absolutely no plastic. Wild animals may ingest it and die. This is a criminal offence under the Act.
• 9Patience is key. It is quite possible you may not sight a predator — enjoy the quiet atmosphere, clean air, and keep eyes and ears open for movement and sounds in the trees and bushes.
• 10Guides and drivers track animals largely by their calls. If the group is chatting, they cannot hear those calls — and you miss the sighting. Keep conversations for rest stops.
• 11Punctuality is critical. When the gates open there is a rush of jeeps. Leave early, queue up, and aim to be the first inside.
• 12Avoid eating or snacking during the safari. An exception may be made for anyone who is diabetic — a small pack of biscuits as contingency is fine.
• 13There will be considerable dust from jeeps ahead. Carry a mask, neck buff, or dupatta to protect yourself.
• 14Avoid heavy perfumes before entering the forest — you may attract insects that mistake you for a flower.
• 15If others in nearby jeeps are loud and disruptive, it is entirely acceptable to ask their driver or guide to quieten them down.
• 16Maintain your balance at all times — especially during the excitement of a tiger sighting when the jeep may jostle. Do not fall off the vehicle.
• 17If you witness a predator at a kill, do not feel sorry for the prey and do not interfere. It is nature's cycle — disrupting a predator at its meal may cause it to starve.
• 18Toilets are available only at designated locations. Try to minimise water intake during the safari so you do not miss out on action due to bio-emergencies.
